Learning from Nature: Biologically-inspired Sensors
Dedy H.B. WicaksonoThe basic inspiration for the stress/strain sensor is taken from the Campaniform sensillum found in insects. Campaniform sensillum is a proprioception organ having structure of dome shape membrane with nearly circular topography, located inside a hole opening with or without encircling collar structure. To understand the working sensing mechanism, as well as to implement basic bio-inspired sensing structure based from this sensor, three basic structures were designed. These structures are blind-hole structure, flat membrane-in-recess structure, and dome-shape membrane-in-recess structure.
